Home Stock An Early Charles II Oak Joint Stool

An Early Charles II Oak Joint Stool

Having a beautifully grained single board top, with a moulded edge above deep top rails, decorated with a central run-moulding, and a further finishing mould along the bottom edge.

The well-splayed legs, with a single ring turning to the top, and a more complicated turning at the bottom, just above the blocks into which the substantial square sectioned stretchers are morticed. Unusually, this mortice and tenon joint is secured by a pair of oak pegs, or dowels, rather than a single peg which is the norm. Below the stretcher the leg retains all the original “pear-shaped” toe.

Excellent rich dark colour and patina.

English, circa 1660.

Width 18 inches, depth 11 inches, height 23 inches.

Ref 603
