A Rare Large and Impressive 16th Century Brass Nuremberg Alms Dish
This is a rare variant on the raised centre dish, the centre itself has 12 double-gadrooned ears, the spaces between each ear filled with a triad of acorns. Most unusually, there is no band of script around the centre, instead is a plain surface with a simple running cipher before the boodge rises to a plain rim. Enriched on the outer edge with a punched decoration of 6 petalled flowers. The edge is rolled.
Nuremberg, circa 1520-50.
Diameter 19.5 inches (49.5 cm).
Ref 932
Tiedemann, Nuremberg Alms Dishes, 2015, shows an example of the same swirled boss, page 36, figure b.
