A Wonderful Carved Tudor Oak Portrait Panel
Having the most handsome of faces, full cheeks, distinguished nose, exceptional moustache and flamboyant goatee beard. The subject sports a cap, correct for the period, with a fine ostrich feather to the fore.
This kindly face is exquisitely carved, with fantastic detail and is integral with the background, which is embellished with tiny carved fish-like scales, which are repeated along the recessed moulding of the lozenge frame. The corners of the panel are filled with stylised oak leaves, with a central whorl.
Superb, rich colour and a wonderful surface.
English, circa 1550.
Width 10 inches, height 15.5 inches, depth 2.75 inches.
